The Waikato golfer David Smail has finished in a share of third place at the Australian Open in Sydney, after blowing the lead in the final round.

Smail, the overnight leader, led by up to four strokes through most of Sunday, but carded double bogeys on the 15th and 16th holes to finish a shot behind the clubhouse leaders, Tim Clark of South Africa and the Australian Mathew Goggin.

Clark won the playoff for the title, while Smail finished with a three over par 75 for a share of third with the Australians Robert Allenby and Stephen Dartnall, on eight under.
