Despite his disastrous finish at the Australian Open golf championship on Sunday, David Smail will end the year New Zealand's top-ranked golfer.

Smail's last two events resulted in a second placing in Japan, and third at Royal Sydney, and at number 86 in the world he's 21 places ahead of Mark Brown.

Michael Campbell is the third highest-ranked New Zealander at 186.

Tiger Woods, who's spent the last six months recovering from knee surgery, is still clearly world number one ahead of the Spaniard Sergio Garcia.
