South Africa celebrate one of their best wins

6:01 am on 22 December 2008

South Africa have a great chance of displacing Australia as test cricket's top nation after a crushing win in the first match of their three test series in Perth.

The Proteas overpowered the home side by achieving the second highest successful run chase in history - 414 for the loss of only four wickets, wrapping up the match with more than a session to spare on the final day.

Man of the match AB de Villiers was 106 not out, and Jean-Paul Duminy scored the winning runs to post his maiden test half century.

After achieving one of their greatest victories both batsmen were mobbed by their teammates as Ricky Ponting's Australians looked on stunned.

Ponting said there were a lot of passengers in his side and the selectors will have to think seriously about their bowling attack for the second test in Melbourne starting on Boxing Day.
