England made a bold attempt yesterday to turn the match their way when they had the home side 44 for 3 in their second innings, but India recovered to 134 for 4 at stumps, an overall lead of 285 runs.
The left-handed opening batsman Gautan Gambhir who made 179 in the first innings is unbeaten on 44.
India won the first test in Chennai by six wickets.
