Good conditions for Sydney Hobart yacht race

5:26 pm on 26 December 2008

Good conditions could see a new record in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race which starts at 3pm New Zealand time.

This year's fleet of 100 yachts is the biggest since 2004 and 3-times line honours winner Wild Oats XI is favoured to take a record fourth line honours title.

The weather bureau is predicting a fine day with winds of around 20 to 25 knots in the afternoon.

The favourable weather conditions mean that whoever gets to Hobart first is likely to break Wild Oats XI's record of one day, 18 hours, 40 minutes and 10 seconds.

There's just one all New Zealand-owned and run boat in the race - Time Lord.
