Bangladesh start well against Sri Lanka

6:14 am on 27 December 2008

The Sri Lankan cricketers have ended the first day of the first test against Bangladesh in Dhaka on 172 for 6.

Left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan and seamer Shahadat Hossain shared five wickets to keep the Sri Lankans in check after they decided to bat first.

Sri Lanka were on course for a big total following a 95-run stand for the second wicket between opener Michael Vandort (44) and Kumar Sangakkara (43) but both faltered against the spin-pace combination.

Only 12 overs were possible in the morning session after a delayed start due to heavy fog, while play finished early because of bad light, allowing just 54 overs in the day.
