Vettori questions needs for extra overs

10:17 am on 27 December 2008

The New Zealand cricket captain Dan Vettori has questioned the need for extra overs to decide the outcome of a Twenty20 match.

After the scores were tied at 155 following the 20 overs each at Eden Park last night, the West Indies captain Chris Gayle plundered 25 off a one-over eliminator to lead his team to victory.

The only other time the two sides have played also ended in a tie with New Zealand winning a bowl-off.

Vettori feels there is no need for a tie-breaker saying what's wrong with a tie.

He says he'd likely feel differently if they'd won, but he feels they've got to be careful not to dilute the game too much.

The second and final Twenty20 international between the teams is in Hamilton tomorrow and New Zealand will be without Scott Styris who broke his thumb last night.
