The skipper of super maxi yacht Skandia says he knew their Sydney to Hobart yacht race fun was over when line honours winner Wild Oats XI cruised past them during Saturday night's calm.
The Grant Wharington helmed Skandia finished one hour and seven minutes behind Wild Oats XI.
Skandia led Wild Oats XI for much of the race but their always slight advantage was overhauled on Saturday night by the raging race favourite.
Wild Oats XI slid away from Skandia after stopping and reversing to free a two-metre shark from her rudder, near Schouten Island off Tasmania's east coast, and also removing an unknown object that had been dragging on his boat's keel since the race started in Sydney Harbour on Friday.
