Two New Zealand swimmers have made A finals on the first day of the Pan Pacific Championships in California, finishing seventh and eighth.

Wellington's Gareth Kean was seventh in the 100 backstroke, and high performance squad member Tash Hind eighth in the 200 freestyle.

Kean produced a personal best of 55 seconds his heat to be 12th fastest but the 18-year-old made the last eight because countries are limited to two swimmers per final.

Hind, who's 19, went under two minutes for the first time in her heat and set a New Zealand record of 1min 58.80 in the final.

In B finals Hayley Palmer was third and Moss Burmester seventh in the 50 and 200 butterfly respectively while Amaka Gessler and Melissa Ingram were fifth and sixth in the 200 freestyle.
