The former world champion Ben Fouhy admits he was nervous and a little rusty as he returned to competitive kayaking at the World Championships in Poland.
Fouhy took more than a year off after the Beijing Olympics, and this year has been training outside of the national squad after a falling out with the national coaches.
Fouhy, the men's K2 and the men's K4 all failed to make their respective A finals.
The 31-year-old says it was great to be back amongst the paddlers he's known for so long, but the competition was very hot with Olympic silver medallist Adam Van Koeverden of Canada also missing out.
Fouhy admits he was well off his best in finishing fourth in his heat of the K1 1000.
Fouhy was five seconds faster in his semi-final and so he's happy to have a ranking inside the top 10 in his first regatta back.
He says his wrist, which had given him concern in the lead-up to the World Championships, does feel a lot better.
