The United States-based Auckland swimmer Lauren Boyle has broken Melissa Ingram's 400 metre freestyle national record in finishing fifth in the A-final at the Pan Pacific Championships in California.

Boyle took just over a second off her personal best set in the heats to set a new record of four minutes 9.59 seconds.

In other A finals Ingram, who's 24, completed an outstanding return to top level international competition when she finished fifth in the 200 metres backstroke, with teenager Gareth Kean fifth in the men's 200 backstroke.

The women's relay team grabbed another New Zealand record when they clocked 3:42.15 to finish fifth in the 4x100 freestyle relay final, and Glenn Snyders won the 50 breaststroke B final.
