Bad year gets worse for Murphy

The New Zealand V8 Supercar driver Grey Murphy concedes a back injury which may rule him out of the first endurance race of the year next month at Phillip Island is another major blow in an already disappointing season.

Murphy is in doubt to race in the upcoming L & H 500 in Victoria following surgery on a bulging disc in his lower back which caused the Castrol driver to collapse in pain over the weekend and to be rushed to hospital.

The four times Bathurst champion underwent surgery on Sunday to fix a bulged disc in his lower back and was discharged from hospital on Monday.

The 39-year-old says he's a 50-50 chance to race at Phillip Island and admits the injury couldn't have come at a worse time.

But he's adamant he'll be back on track for the biggest race of the Supercar season, October's V8 Supercars Bathurst 1000.
