The South African professional rugby player Bees Roux has been arrested on suspicion of beating a police officer to death and will appear in court in Pretoria charged with murder.
Police say the officer was found lying in a street of Pretoria in the predawn hours of Saturday.
He was rushed to hospital but died due to extensive injuries.
The 28-year-old Roux is a 115 kilogram prop who plays for the Super rugby side the Bulls.
The Bulls say they have no more information about the events involving the player.
