Tall Blacks fall despite Penney heroics

Lithuania's beaten New Zealand 92-79 in their opening game of the basketball world championships at Izmir in Turkey.

A poor defensive effort in the second quarter cost the Tall Blacks, as the Lithuanians went on a 13-2 scoring spree, winning the quarter 25-10.

Kirk Penney scored a game-high 37 points for the Tall Blacks, who play Spain on Monday.

In the other games in their pool, Lebanon beat Canada 81-71 and France beat Spain 72-66.

In Sapporo the New Zealand women's side have upset Japan 77-74.

The Tall Ferns trailed by as much as 19 points midway through the third quarter, but came back strongly and finally snatched a decisive lead off a three-pointer from Kate McMeeken-Ruscoe with little more than a minute remaining.
