The American motorcyclist Ben Spies captured his first career pole position when he dominated qualifying for the Indianapolis MotoGP.

Spies, on a Yamaha, was more than two-tenths of a second faster than that of championship leader Jorge Lorenzo who will be his teammate at the factory Yamaha team next season.

The 26-year-old led a tight qualifying field with the top eight riders completing a lap within one second of each other.

Lorenzo, on a Yamaha, was second-fastest... American Nicky Hayden on a Ducati was third, while Australian Casey Stoner, who dominated practice, could only come in sixth-fastest on his Ducati.

Defending series champion Valentino Rossi, who is fifth in the points standings after missing four races with a broken leg, crashed twice today but was 7th fastest on his Yamaha..
