New Zealand's made a bad start to the women's hockey World Cup tournament in Argentina, losing 2-0 to fourth-ranked Germany,
The seventh-ranked Black Sticks began well but their defence faltered midway through the first half, conceding a well-taken field goal then one from a penalty corner three minutes later.
Although they created plenty of chances after that they couldn't crack a well-organised defence.
Their next opponents at the 12 nation tournament are the reigning champions The Netherlands.
