The Otago rugby team has won it's first match in the National Provinvial Championship this season, with a close 17-16 victory against Hawke's Bay in Dunedin.

Hawke's Bay took an early lead, kicking a penalty just three minutes into the match to go 3-nil up.

But conceding early points sparked Otago into action, and the home side managed to score in the 20th minute through flanker Alando Soakai.

Their first-five, Glenn Dickson, converted the try, then kicked a penalty goal to take Otago into the half-time break with a 10-3 lead.

Just three minutes into the second half Otago extended their lead with a try to Kees Meeuws, but Hawkes Bay managed to convert two penalties within the next fifteen minutes to stay in touch with the home side.

When Hawke's Bay's hooker, Hikawera Elliot, scored a try from a line-break in the 60th minute, it looked like the home side might have to wait at least another week before claiming their first victory, but Otago held on with some solid defence to post a narrow 17-16 win.
