The New Zealand womens rugby team has won the Rugby World Cup for a fourth time.

The Black Ferns came through a tight final against England at Twickenham Stoop to win 13-10 after leading 7-nil at halftime.

The New Zealand equestrian Caroline Powell has achieved a career high - her first four-star title - at the prestigious Burghley Horse Trials in England.

Powell partnered her 17 year old horse Lenamore to a clear showjumping round to edge out the top Englishman William Fox-Pitt by 4.2 points.

At the US tennis Open, the defending champion Kim Clijsters has breezed into the quarter-finals, beating her old friend Ana Ivanovic from Serbia 6-2 6-1.

At the mens world basketball championships in Istanbul, the defending champions Spain, Serbia and Slovenia are the first three qualifiers for the quarter-finals.

NZ play their second round match against Russia tomorrow morning.
