6:12 am on 7 September 2010

New Zealand's veteran motocross rider Josh Coppins has announced his retirement from the sport.

Coppins 17-year Grand Prix career will end after the Motocross of Nations in the United States at the end of the month.

The Motueka born rider won 11 Grands Prix, but never won the world title... finishing second once and third twice.

Having ridden for Suzuki, Honda and Yamaha, 33-year-old Coppins faced a new challenge this year when he joined the Italian Aprilia Racing squad and is currently 11th in the championship standings.
