England have beaten Pakistan by 24 runs in the first one-day cricket international at the Riverside to take a 1-nil lead in the five-match series.

Steve Davies top-scored for England with 87, while Jonathan Trott hit 69 to ensure the hosts were always in control.

Kamran Akmal's 53 and a quick-fire 43 from Umar Akmal weren't enough for Pakistan to overhaul the challenging total of 274 set by England and were bowled out for 250 in the 41st over.
