The Wellington Phoenix have maintained their incredible unbeaten streak at the Westpac Stadium fortress after beating Sydney FC 2-1 in their A-league football clash in the capital last night.

New signing Nick Ward introduced himself to Phoenix's home fans by scoring the spectacular winner.

With the scores level at 1-all and the match looking destined to end in a draw, the former Melbourne Victory midfielder regathered a one-two pass from striker Chris Greenacre and hammered his shot into the top right-hand corner to seal the much needed win for the Phoenix.

After two losses the three points were vital for coach Ricki Herbert's side, who face the daunting prospect of consecutive matches in Melbourne this week -- against Victory on Wednesday and Heart on Sunday.

The Wellington club move from eighth to fifth on the points ladder.
