5:40 am on 18 September 2010

New Zealand's Rubin Statham has continued his impressive record in Davis Cup tennis, winning the second singles rubber for New Zealand at the Asia/Oceania Group II Final in Bangkok.

Statham beat Thailand's number one Kittiphong Wachiramanowong in four sets, 4-6 7-6 6-1 7-6 to secure a 2-nil lead for New Zealand on the opening day.

The match was suspended in the third set for 90 minutes due to rain but Statham never looked back when the match resumed sealing the last two sets.

Michael Venus won the opening round in straight sets earlier on Friday.

New Zealand's number one Daniel King-Turner and Michael Venus team up for Saturday's doubles against Thailand's Sanchai Ratiwatana and Sonchat Ratiwatana.

The winning nation will be promoted to Asia/Oceania Group I in 2011.
