Hewitt pulls out of Davis Cup tie with wrist injury

7:23 am on 20 September 2010

The weather may be miserable at Australia's Davis Cup World Group playoff with Belgium in Cairns, but the prognosis on Lleyton Hewitt is much worse.

Hewitt succumbed to a wrist injury, ensuring Australia must break back into the elite World Group for the first time since 2007 without their most successful Davis Cup player.

Australia lead Belgium 2-1 with two games remaining.

Hewitt's withdrawal thrust world number 126 Luczak into the biggest match of his five-year Davis Cup career.

Suddenly the 31-year-old battler was entrusted with ending 28-time champions' pain and guiding them back into the elite 16-strong World Group.

And against Belgian number one Rochus - a player ranked 47 places higher than the Australian journeyman.

However with torrential rain drenching tropical north queensland yesterday's play was postponed

Play is scheduled to resume at midday today, but more showers are forecast.
