Rugby remains the most popular sport in New Zealand ahead of football, netball and rugby league according to a UMR Research survey.

The poll shows 64 percent of people are interested in rugby, with football in second spot at 45 percent.

44 percent of respondents were interested in netball while rugby league was fourth with 40 percent.

The online survey was completed by 1000 people aged 18 and over and has a margin of error of just over three percent.

The survey did show large regional variations when it came to participants saying which competition they preferred with the National Rugby League competition more popular in Auckland than the national provincial rugby competition, the ITM Cup.

In Wellington the ITM Cup was most popular ahead of football's A-League, with the NRL a distant third.

In Canterbury the provincial rugby competition rated top, well ahead of the A-League and the NRL.
