Carney free to play in grand final

The Sydney Roosters playmaker Todd Carney and the St George Illawarra Dragons' Kiwis prop Jeremy Smith are both free to play in Sunday's rugby league grand final after accepting early guilty pleas to charges by the NRL judiciary.

Carney, the Dally M medallist, avoids a suspension for a careless high tackle on Gold Coast Titans captain Scott Prince in the Roosters' preliminary final thumping of the Titans in Brisbane, while Smith's escaped further sanction for his knee on West Tigers winger Lote Tuquiri in the Dragons' one-point victory in Sydney.
