Athletes arrive in Delhi

12:08 pm on 28 September 2010

Despite warnings that work on the Commonwealth Games athletes village wouldn't be completed until the middle of this week, hundreds of athletes have moved into their Delhi accommodation.

The Games organising committee chairman Suresh Kalmadi says most of the apartments in the village are finally ready, and the rest would be finished in the next few days.

The first New Zealand athletes - the bowls and archery teams - arrived in Delhi on Tuesday morning.

Another 57 New Zealand athletes are scheduled to arrive in Delhi over the next 24 hours, with the gymnasts, weightlifters, synchronised swimmers and boxers all heading to India.

Meanwhile Kalmadi has publicly accused the Commonwealth's western countries of conspiring to unleash the scathing criticism which has marred the build-up to the Games.

The Games will be opened by Prince Charles on Sunday night.
