The controversial South African athlete Caster Semenya will miss the Commonwealth Games in Delhi because of a back injury.

South African Olympic committee chief executive Tubby Reddy says a scan has confirmed the 800-meter world champion is unfit to make her return to major competition at next week's games.

The 19-year-old Semenya has been experiencing back pain and joins a growing list of stars who will miss the Games, including Usain Bolt, Asafa Powell and Australians John Steffensen and Dani Samuels.

Semenya had hoped to challenge for gold at the Commonwealth Games after being cleared to run by the IAAF in July following a gender test dispute.
