The Tour de France champion Alberto Contador has tested positive to a banned steroid and has been provisionally suspended in news that is sure to send tremours through the cycling world.

Contador, a three times Tour de France winner, tested positive for the banned steroid clenbuterol in July this year.

Contador has blamed food contamination for the positive result.

He says he can't tolerate the idea of a possible sanction and his positive drug test is all a big mistake.

Contador says he's always defended doping controls, and there's no athlete more reliable than him when it comes to being located for out-of-competition drug testing.

Meanwhile the International Cycling Union has revealed that last month's Tour of Spain runner up Ezequiel Mosquera and fellow Spaniard David Garcia Da Pena have both tested positive for a banned substance.
