Spain's world tennis number one Rafael Nadal fell short on 24 of 26 break point chances as he lost his Thailand Open semi-final 2-6 7-6 6-3 to compatriot Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

The surprise winner handed world number one Nadal only his eighth loss of the season against 61 wins and six titles will now face Jarkko Nieminen of Finland, who beat German Benjamin Becker 6-3 6-2 in their semi-final.

Denmark's Caroline Wozniacki - who clawed out a three-set victory in the final in Tokyo on Saturday against Russia's Elena Dementieva - is the top seed at the China Open in Beijing, where she could take over the world number one ranking.
