Cheatley, Villumsen get Games confidence boost

8:40 am on 3 October 2010

New Zealand cyclists Cath Cheatley and Linda Villumsen will take a lot of confidence into the Commonwealth Games after finishing just over three seconds behind the winner in the women's road race at the World Championships in Geelong.

Cheatley finished 11th and Villumsen 19th in a bunch sprint just before the finish of the 128-kilometre circuit race, which was won by Italian rider Giorgia Bronzini - her second world championship in as many years.

Bronzini won a thrilling sprint finish at Geelong to pip the 2006 world champion Marianne Vos of the Netherlands and Sweden's Emma Johansson finished with the bronze medal.

The New Zealand pair head to Delhi tomorrow to join the rest of the team while attention turns to today's elite men's race.
