Silver Ferns have easy first win in Delhi

The New Zealand netballers made the best possible start to their Commonwealth Games title defence, beating Papua New Guinea 102-21 in Delhi.

Up 57-12 at half-time, the Silver Ferns coach, Ruth Aitken, took the opportunity to try out new combinations on court, giving 11 of the 12 players game time.

The only one to miss out was the veteran midcourter Temepara George, who did not strip up.

While the different combinations slowed the Ferns game slightly, it was little more than a training run for the New Zealanders, with the 81-goal margin telling the full story.

The 22-year-old shooter, Grace Rasmussen, says while there's still some areas to work on, the team's feeling good about their performance, and how the different combinations performed.

Australia also won their first pool game against Samoa, but not nearly as convincingly.

Austrlia managed a 76-39 win against a Samoa side that New Zealand beat by 64 goals earlier this year.
