The Southland swimmer Natalie Wiegersma has been pipped for a medal at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, finishing fourth in the 200 individual medley final.

The 20 year-old recorded a personal best and broke the national record, finishing three-one hundreths of a second away from the bronze medal.

Lauren Boyle improved on her time in the heats of the 200 freestyle, but finished seventh in the final.

Daniel Bell and Gareth Kean have both qualified for the final of the 50 backstroke, while Hayley Palmer was eighth equal fastest in the 50 butterfly, but decided against taking part in swim-off for the last spot in the final, instead concentraing on the 100 freestyle today.

There are another eight New Zealanders involved in swimming heats this afternoon, including Glenn Snyders in the 100 breaststroke, while Moss Burmester returns for the 50 butterfly after failing to make the final of his specialist event, the 200 butterfly yesterday.
