The New Zealand cyclist Alison Shanks has broken New Zealand's gold medal drought at the Commonwealth Games after storming to victory in the women's individual pursuit in Delhi.

Shank's beat Northern Ireland's Wendy Houvenaghel in the gold medal ride falling just short of the games record winning in 3 minutes 30.875 seconds.

New Zealand's medal tally was then lifted to 12 after the men's cycling team of Eddie Dawkins, Sam Webster and Ethan Mitchell claimed silver in the team sprint final narrowly losing to arch-rivals Australia.

The swimmers get their chance to shine next with New Zealanders competing in seven finals over the next few hours including silver medallist Gareth Kean in the men's 100 metre backstroke and new Commonwealth Games record holder Melissa Ingram in the women's 200 metre backstroke final.
