The Australian rugby sevens team are hopeful of only their second Commonwealth Games medals in Delhi.

They completed a perfect preparation for the Games by scoring a big win over world champions Samoa in Darwin to claim the Oceania Sevens championships last weekend and since arriving in Delhi, coach Michael O'Connor's 12-man squad have shaken off a couple of injuries, Wallabies winger Lachie Turner and Western Force flyer Nick Cummins now set to take the field.

Australia will take on Uganda, Sri Lanka and England on day one of competition and will be aiming to progress undefeated though the pool matches to secure a favourable draw in Tuesday's finals.

The Australian squad has a chance to create history if they can finish with gold or silver at the Commonwealth Games as Australia has not medalled since securing bronze in 1998 when sevens first joined the Games in Kuala Lumpur.
