Former All Blacks coach John Mitchell is recovering from a stabbing at his apartment in South Africa, after mistaking intruders for a flatmate playing a practical joke.
Mitchell's Gauteng Lions team says Mitchell was in bed on Saturday night after watching his Lions team lose their final Currie Cup game of the season when he heard noises in his apartment.
The 46-year-old is in the same block as conditioning coach and fellow New Zealander Wayne Taylor and, according to Lions media manager Krystle Geach, Mitchell thought it was Taylor "playing a joke on him".
Geach told the Reuters news organisation that he "began wrestling with the intruder and was then stabbed by a second intruder in the upper arm and thigh".
Mitchell received stitches in hospital but has been released and is expected to return to work on Monday.
He's taking over at the Lions Super Rugby franchise next season.
