The defending champion New Zealand rugby sevens team has swept aside its competition in pool play the Delhi Commomnwealth Games.

New Zealand beat Canada 43-7, Guyana 52-nil and Scotland 43-nil.

They'll now meet Wales in tonight's quarter-finals with either England or Samoa their likely semi-final opponent.

Coach Gordon Tietjens says he's more confident about his side following their first day performance and was particularly happy with their defence, conceding just one try and that was when they were down to 5 men.

IRB champions Samoa were upset 12-10 by Kenya in the last match of the opening day.
