Crowd trouble ends Italy-Serbia clash

7:44 am on 14 October 2010

The Italy-Serbia Euro 2012 Group C football match in Genoa was called off after Serb fans threw flares and bangers onto the pitch and at Italian supporters.

The referee stopped play six minutes into the game when a flare appeared to hit Italy goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano.

Kick-off had earlier been delayed by more than 30 minutes due to crowd trouble as police struggled to maintain order.

There were also problems in the town centre before the game when Serbia's first choice goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic was attacked by his own fans.

Stojkovic was taken to hospital for tests after a flare was thrown onto the team bus.

He used to play for Red Star Belgrade but now plays for Patizan Belgrade, angering hardcore Red Star fans.
