UEFA opens probe after Serbia fans cause match abandonment

Serbia's long-standing football hooligan problem may lead to the Balkan country being tossed out of the sport.

The midweek Euro 2012 qualifying match between Italy and Serbia in Genoa was abandoned six minutes into the game, when flares landed near players on the pitch, and visiting fans launched flares at Italy supporters and tried to cause a riot.

Serbia's future in the Euro 2012 qualifiers is in doubt with European football's ruling body UEFA likely to impose a penalty much heavier than a mere fine.

Group C leaders Italy are also likely to be awarded a 3-0 walkover win. Their fans at the game will get refunds.
