The world tennis number one Rafael Nadal has made a shock exit from the Shanghai Masters, beaten in the third round by the Austrian Jurgen Meltzer, the 13th seed.

Nadal, who won the Tokyo Open on Sunday and was playing in his third tournament back-to-back, had not lost a set to Melzer in their three previous meetings.

World number two Novak Djokovic showed he's in top form after last week's China Open win with a scorching display to reach the last eight, smashing the Frenchman Richard Gasquet 6-1 6-1, while Roger Federer and Andy Murray also cruised into the quarter-finals.
