The new owners of the English football club Liverpool will be expected to spend freely to rescue the five times European champions from their worst start to a season in more than 50 years.

Liverpool's failure to qualify for this season's Champions League and doubts about the proposed new stadium in nearby Stanley Park mean New England Sports Ventures have their work cut out.

The new owner John W Henry, the proprietor of Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox, says he will do what is necessary to get the club back to the top.

Henry paid 635 million dollars for the club.
