Lions take out third semi-final place

Wellington have secured their semi-final place in the provincial rugby competition after a crucial 27-14 away win over Southland.

The visitors trailed 14-10 at half-time but kept Southland scoreless while running in two more tries to go third on the table behind Canterbury and Waikato.

Wellington are level with Taranaki but thanks to last week's 34-point thrashing of their near neighbours, it's Taranaki who miss out after Auckland beat Tasman at Eden Park on Sunday to book a home semi-final.

Otago have taken out the wooden spoon after losing to visitors Manawatu 46-24. The Turbos ran in six tries to three, including four in the second half.

It's the first time Otago have finished bottom since 1979. They scored just two wins and suffered 11 losses in 2010.
