Melbourne Cups king hopes to be on track

The family of the legendary Australian horse trainer Bart Cummings expect him to be released from a Melbourne hospital this weekend.

The 82-year-old is in hospital with a chest infection and will miss Derby Day at Flemington, but his family is hoping he'll be on track for Tuesday's Melbourne Cup.

Cummings has already had two month-long spells in hospital this year, with pneumonia, and a broken pelvis.

He's in the Cup limelight again this year through the outstanding deeds of his star horse So You Think.

So You Think is equal favourite for the Cup after beating a strong field to retain his Cox Plate title last weekend.

His son Anthony Cummings says it'd be foolish to assume the four year old's not up to running the two mile distance.

So You Think will run the MacKinnon Stakes at Flemington on Saturday.
