Slater on verge of history

The veteran surfer Kelly Slater can win a record 10th world crown and create sporting history at the latest pro tour event in Puerto Rico.

With one hand already on the 2010 men's world title, the world No.1 needs only a strong showing in the ninth stop on the tour to seal the record, with just Puerto Rico and Hawaii left on this year's calendar.

South African world No.2 Jordy Smith must finish higher than equal fifth in Puerto Rico to be any chance of unseating the 38-year-old Florida native, but if Slater finishes equal third or better he'll clinch the title and cement his reputation as the undisputed king of surfing.
