England prop forced to retire

The former England rugby captain Phil Vickery has been forced to retire from rugby after being told his body could stand no more punishment.

The 34-year-old prop, a member of England's World Cup-winning team of 2003, had successfully come back from four major back and neck operations, but he's developed more neck problems, and his doctor warned him the risk of serious injury was too great.

Nicknamed 'Raging Bull', Vickery said he was "churning up inside" about his decision to retire, having planned to play in a fourth World Cup next year, but he's convinced he's made the right call.
