Flemington track manager optimistic

Flemington race course resembled a lake on Sunday following more than 60 millimetres of rain in 24 hours, but the track manager is optimistic about the state of the track for Tuesday's Melbourne Cup.

Mick Goodie says the prospects are bright for a much improved racing surface because the course has great recuperative powers and a lot of people will be surprised by the state of the track tomorrow.

Meanwhile the Melbourne Cup legend Bart Cumings was discharged from hospital after several days treatment for pneumonia, and if he gets to the course it'll be in the company of a critical care nurse and a paramedic.
