The American-bred French-raced stayer Americain, riden by French jockey Gerald Mosse, has won the 150th running of the Melbourne Cup on a rain-sodden Flemington track.

One of the top chances for the 3200-metre race, Americain finished strongly in the last 400 metres scorching past Maluckyday and a fading pre-race favourite So You Think to win the biggest race in Australasia.

The six-year-old Americain was a last-start winner of the Geelong Cup on October the 20th and Australian part owner Gerry Ryan says Americain's win was a dream come true for him and fellow owner Kevin Bamford.
