McCullum set to open for New Zealand

10:22 am on 4 November 2010

The New Zealand cricketers are considering opening the innings with Brendan McCullum in the Test series against India.

McCullum announced his decision to quit wicketkeeping in Tests in June so that he could bat higher up the order, but said he would continue to keep in the limited-over formats.

The Black Caps have continued to struggle at the top of the batting order.

Captain Daniel Vettori says they'll decide if McCullum will open or bat at three.

Vettori says McCullum can set the tone opening or at number three, much like Virender Sehwag does for India, and that can take a lot of pressure off the rest of the batsmen.

The first Test starts in Ahmedabad on this afternoon.
