New Zealand's first medal at the World Rowing Championships at Lake Karapiro has come from a disabled rower.

Daniel McBride took the single sculls bronze in the adaptive rowing event.

The 41-year-old McBride, who rows in the arms and shoulders only category, fought off a challenge by the Russian rower Alexy Chuvashev to place behind Ukraine and Great Britain.

Four New Zealand crews have now qualified for finals.

The single sculler Mahe Drysdale won his semi-final after a controversial start where he halted the race because of a technical problem.

The men's pair won their semi-final, while the single sculler Emma Twigg and the men's eight also did enough to qualify.

It will be just the third race for McBride, a paraplegic who races as an arms-and-shoulders single sculler.

McBride has previously represented New Zealand in basketball.
