Centuries to Virender Sehwag and Rahul Dravid have the Indian cricketers on top after the first day of the opening Test against New Zealand in Ahmedabad.
After deciding to bat first India scored 329 for three with Sehwag making 173 and Dravid 104 in a combined 237-run partnership for the second wicket.
The Black Caps had some consolation in the last session of the day when they picked up the wickets of Sehwag and Dravid.
However with Sachin Tendulkar 13 not out, VVS Laxman seven not out and Suresh Raina and captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni to follow, India will aim to drive home the advantage of batting first on a pitch already offering turn and inconsistent bounce.
The all-rounder Jessie Ryder, Daniel Vettori and Chris Martin have one wicket each, and Ryder admits the bowlers failed to stick to the game plan.
Ryder, who picked up a wicket, says they should have done better, especially against the likes of Sehwag, who hit a run-a-ball 173 which included 24 fours.
The visitors compounded their miserable day by dropping both Sehwag and Dravid.
The second Test is in Hyderabad and the third in Nagpur.
