New Zealand rider Hayden Roulston has won the seventh stage of the Tour of Southland cycle race while compatriot Jack Bauer now wears the yellow jersey, after he finished second behind the BikeNZ rider in a sprint.

Former leader Jeremy Yates, Bauer's Share The Road team-mate, finished in the peleton, a minute and 42 seconds back on the 64-kilometre ride from Winton to Te Anau.

Roulston's now just three seconds behind Bauer in the overall race classification while Yates is now a minute 24 behind.

Roulston, who's won the Tour three times, says he's confident of another title tomorrow, after sealing two previous editions of the gruelling race on the final day.
